“As a continual migrant, (…) Identity is depicted as fluctuating rather than a binary or continuum.”
“Jeon’s obsession with two videos - documents of two Asian men unaware of their observers - he crafts a deep formal tumble through two fleeting moments in history.”
- Tei Blow, from the curator’s note -
Deep Out Agents
presented by Gibney as a part of Double Plus program
a solo piece created, designed and performed by Hyung Seok Jeon
curated by Tei Blow
production manager Chris Nourse
lighting design by Asami Morita
The piece attempts to deconstruct two video footages recorded with interval of four years. The first video footage portrays a mid-aged Korean male dancing furiously in a night club. The second video footage was taken at a gym in Taiwan, which shows a mid-aged male exercising on a treadmill. Right above him, a TV screen shows a burning car. Both footages do not reveal the person’s face. The arrangement of deconstructed movements will center around objectified physicality of two subjects’ tendency to fight against conformity.
